Benjamin “Kyle” Potter, MD, FACS is the Paul B. Magnuson Professor of Bone and Joint Surgery and Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He is the immediate past Norman M. Rich Professor and Chair of the Uniformed Services University - Walter Reed Department of Surgery. Prior to that, he was the Director for Surgery (Surgeon-in-chief) at Walter Reed. COL (retired) Potter served as the Orthopaedic Surgery Consultant to the US Army Surgeon General in from March 2019 through September of 2022 and retired in 2023 following over two decades of active duty service, inlcuding three deployments to the Middle East. A musculoskeletal oncologist who loves performing complex limb reconstructions for sarcoma patients, Dr. Potter has also developed a passion and (hopefully) expertise in caring for patients with limb loss and has done research regarding amputation-related outcomes, complications, and heterotopic ossification, as well as pioneering work on targeted muscle reinnervation, osseointegration, and related "bionic" techniques. In additon to over 250 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Potter co-edited the 4th and 5th editions of the Atlas of Amputations and Limb Deficiencies textbook for the AAOS. He serves as a Deputy Editor for Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma. Finally, he serves on the Scientific and Medical Advisory Committee (SCIMAC) for the Amputee Coalition.
Dr. Potter is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency training at the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center and a musculoskeletal oncology fellowship at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. Kyle lives in Lower Merion, PA with his wife, Michelle, an emergency medicine physician, entirely too many kids, and a cat.
